5 Mobile Phones Less Than Rs 1000 That Can Be Bought In India

These phones will perform their basic duties and a bit more while avoiding the extra 5% duty levied by the government.
At a time when smartphones dominate headlines and are the first choice for most youngsters, simple mobile phones have seemingly lost significance. Yet manufacturers haven't stopped making them. In fact, these mobile-phones are still being released by big brands such as Nokia and Samsung and constitute a sizeable chunk of phones sold in our country.

These basic phones are usually ultra low-cost phones, targeted at people who prefer to use mobile phones for calling and SMS, rather than high-end fancy feature. Even with a smartphone in the house, you may want one of these as a second phone purely for their simplicity and battery backup. We list five mobile phones that people can buy for less than Rs 1000 in India.
All of the below have been selected based on their brand value in India, featuring the latest model in the series. These may be boring devices for many, but feature extras like FM Radio - and are great when it comes to battery life (talktime on a single charge). Prices were drawn from online retailers, and you may be able to purchase them for even lesser at your local brick-and-mortar stores.

Subway Surfers - Endless running game now on streets of Rome

Subway Surfers , which is my favorite endless running game bar none, has just pulled up at a new stop in its ongoing World Tour. And this particular stop is nothing but magnificent .
After taking us to the New York City Subway and treating us to the carnival in Rio de Janeiro , Subway Surfers is now transporting us to the streets of Rome.
Yes, the Subway Surfers World Tour is now taking place in a virtual version of Rome, which is, of course, filled with fountains, clotheslines, and pillars.
And like the previous World Tour stops, Subway Surfers’ Rome edition introduces a new character and new boards.
Subway Surfers
The new character comes in the person of Roberto, the Italian scooter kid. For a limited time only, you can add him to your character collection using 95,000 coins.
As for the new boards, there are four: Starboard, Scoot, Kick-Off, and Chicky.
Starboard is free, Scoot can be bought for 35,000 coins, and Kick-Off is available for 50,000 coins for a limited time only.
Chicky, for its part, requires something a little more special. To unlock the Chicky board, you must hunt for and collect 100 Easter eggs. And you must do so as you surf through Rome while the train inspector pursues you in his hilarious Easter bunny suit.

Evernote updated v5.0 for Android, adds photo and search features

Evernote released a new version for Android today, bringing new photo and search features and a refreshed design to the popular note-taking app. Many of the features already exist in the iOS app, which was updated in November , but at least one is new to the company's mobile products.
The update, which also includes useful new home screen widgets, went live in the Google Play store this morning. It comes on the heels of Google's release of the Keep note-taking service last week, a product that duplicates some Evernote features and that will integrate with Google Drive.
But about that Android update: A multishot feature lets users snap multiple photos of a moment, and save them to Evernote without ever leaving the in-app camera. Evernote is also bringing its " page camera " over from iOS, whichuses the smartphone's camera to turn Evernote into a pocket scanner. The page camera finds the edges of scanned pages, removes any shadows and improves the contrast, Evernote says.
Android is the first mobile platform to get access to shortcuts, a helpful feature introduced recently in Evernote's Mac app. Frequently accessed notes and notebooks can be added to the app's left panel, saving users from having todig through through their notebooks.
The company also introduced new features that take advantage of Evernote's partnership with the hip notebook maker Moleskine , which allow easier digitization of paper notebook pages into digital copies.
Users who pay for Evernote's premium service are also getting a document search feature that will index keywords in Microsoft Office, iWork and Open Office documents. Now any words found inside those documents will pop up when queried, just as Evernote already now searches through PDFs for keywords.
I prefer the look and feel of Evernote's new Android version to the iOS version, where the file-folders design metaphor often confuses me. The Android app's simple sliding panel mimics the feel of Evernote's excellent Mac app, where creating and searching notes is a breeze. With this latest redesign, Evernote may have created its best mobile experience to date.

Sony's slimmest, lightest tablet in the world, Xperia Z is set to hit retail stores in May .  The official pricing of the high-end slate has been under wraps, but with the pricing for UK and other key European countries out, it is not hard to ballpark the pricing for India.
The Sony Xperia Z tablet will be available in two variants, with the price of 16GB Wi-Fi (SGP311) model expected to be Rs 35,000 approximately and the 32GB version (SGP312) slightly higher at Rs 37,000. Both the models will come in black, although only the 32GB version will be available in white.
The powerful tablet boasts of 1.5 GHz quad-core APQ 8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, Android's4.1.2 operating system and 6000 mAh battery life. What's amazing is that this heavy-duty 10.1-inch tablet, weighs under 500 grams and is just 6.9mmthick.
The slate also boasts of  water and dust proof properties like its high-end sibling, Xperia Z smartphone . It also flaunts a primary 8.1-megapixel snapper and a  2.2-megapixel secondary camera along with 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. On the connectivity front we have NFC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
While Sony has had not so successful run in the tablet category, its latest offering may just mark its return to the Android tablet market.
 Stay tuned for more.

The Croods - amazing iOS/Android game review

The Croods is a new iOS and Android game from Angry Birds creator Rovio. It’s a tie-in with the new Dreamworks movie of the same name, and is currently available as a free download from the iTunes App Store and Google Play, with additional in-app purchases of in-game currency.
The Croods sees players taking control of the prehistoric family from the movie and guiding them through various misadventures as they attempt to become self-sufficient and invent various items. Basic game play revolves around trapping ten different types of animal, feeding them the correct food to tame them, building them a home and then feeding them to make them produce useful items. These items are then subsequently used to build other structures, trap more types of animal and invent various items which unlock new areas on the game map.
Players’ progression through the game is measured through the usual experience point system, and also through a sequence of quests(here rather aptly referred to as “chores”) provided by one of the characters from the movie. Players earn small quantities of experience points for everything they do, but practically speaking they will have to complete the quests in order to progress at anything approaching a satisfying rate, since quests offer significantly higher rewards than single actions.
Social features for the game include the ability to connect to Facebook and invite friends, but at present there doesn’t seem to be a lot to do when visiting neighbors. The “fake friend” the game provides players with implies that there will be something to do with friends soon, but at present this is a largely unnecessary feature. In the meantime,it is also one of two features — the other being cloud saves via a proprietary Rovio account — that mean the game requires a network connection to play, or at least  start;  the connection dropping once the game has begun appears to allow the player to continue playing for at least a short time. It is arguably not unreasonable for a game intended to be played on mobile devices to require a data connection, but given the recent controversy over EA’s SimCity game and its “always-online” requirement, this is something that developers should probably take care with, at least in the short term.
The Croods isn’t a particularly bad game — its audio-visual presentation is good and captures the personality of the movie’s characters quite well — but its game play is somewhat uninspiring. At heart, it is yet another licensed property that has been adapted into an isometric-perspective game about waiting for timers to expire. While these types of game are demonstrably popular and profitable, it’s disappointing to see a developer as creative as Rovio taking what appears to be the path of least resistance for many mobile game designers. With this in mind, it’s tough to recommend The Croods with any real enthusiasm, but the movie tie-in factor coupled with the fact that the audience still seems receptive to this type of “freemium” experience means that it will likely enjoy some success at least in the short term.

Airtel 4G LTE launched in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula

Bharti Airtel has launched 4G ( LTE ) services in Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula. The service will offer data download speeds up to 100 Mbps. Airtel had already launched its 4G services in Kolkata, Bangalore and Pune.
The service will be able to support streaming of High Definition (HD) videos, and other services that work on high speed networks. However unlike Pune, where the company has announced support for voice services, in rest of the circles including Chandigarh no such announcement has been made.
Also, Airtel has launched the LTE service with only two devices - a 4G multimode Dongle and a WiFi router (CPE) both priced at Rs 4,999. It has five unlimited plans with high speed data limit post which users will get speed of 128 Kbps only. The unlimited plans start at Rs 999 for 6 GB. There are Rs 1,399, Rs 1,999, Rs 2,999 and Rs 4,799 plans as well for which you would get 9 GB, 18 GB, 30 GB and 50 GB of high speed data respectively.
Airtel is offering discounts with all these plans. For instance, in the Rs 999 plan, you will get Rs 147 back every month for six months. Similarly, Rs1,399 plan gives Rs 466 off for 6 months, Rs 312 iswaived off every month for 12 months in the Rs 1,999 plan. In the other two plans, you will get Rs 417 off every month for 12 months.
Airtel is also offering Smartbytes, which basically allows you to buy extra high speed data quota. These are priced at Rs 600, Rs 875 and Rs 1500 offering 3 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB extra data.
The plans are not very expensive when you compare these with 3G services, and since all the plans are unlimited you will not even get a bill shock. However, currently there are no tablets or smartphones in the market which are compatibleto use the 4G services, so you can only make use of the 4G network with your laptops or as a home/office broadband network.
Airtel is currently the only player to offer 4G services in the country. However once players likeReliance Industries (RIL) launches their service we will see more competition and a steep drop in4G data tariffs.
The company has said that it is currently working towards rolling out state-of-the-art networks in remaining license circles. And we know from our sources that Delhi and Mumbai circles are next in line for the launch.
