Rise alarm clock - iOS App of the Week, available for free to download

Rise alarm clock named iOS App of the Week, available for free download
If for whatever reason the default alarm clock in iOS isn't doing it for you, Rise happens to be one of our favorite third-party substitutes. And this week, Apple is giving away the app —normally $1.99—at no charge as part of its revolving App of the Week promotion. Rise's dead-simple interface (you slide a finger up or down your iPhone's screen to set a wake-up time) and elegant design make its normal price easy to part with, but when it's up for grabs at no cost to you, we're pressed to find any reason why you shouldn't give it a shot. You may be thankful you did starting tomorrow morning.

Foursquare V6.0 Update Brings check-in button, easier Explore and more

Foursquare has launched a major update to its iOS app, rethinking the location-based service as a discovery tool instead of primarily a way to see what your friends are doing. Search is much more prominent in the app, and it suggests nearby attractions as soon as you open it.
The New York-based company that pioneered location-based apps says it redesigned the app based on its data — which includes 3.5 billion check-ins over the past four years — to find out the"most interesting things going on around you."

Foursquare 6.0 is organized into four main parts:

  • Search, which is front and center when you open the app.
  • A map that highlights nearby friends and "interesting" places.
  • A revamped feed with your friends' check-ins from around the world, with personalized recommendations mixed in.
  • A brand-new, and extremely prominent, check-in button (see below).
In a blog post , Foursquare explains that its recommendation engine is designed for people who don't have time to sift through dozens of reviews when they're looking for a place to have lunch. The top places are always at the top of your results when you perform a search.
Similar to other current social apps, Foursquare 6.0 makes the app's navigation accessible by swiping from the left. Notifications are in the top right — exactly like the most recent update to the Google+ app .

Download free From iTunes Store

Have you browsed the new Foursquare yet? What do you think of the update? Let us know in the comments.

IPL 6 Must Have App's To Enjoy Live Scores & Streaming

What is the best way to celebrate the second anniversary of India's second successful World Cup victory? With song, dance, cine and cricket stars, and quite obviously quick-fire cricket matches. As the sixth edition of IPL kick-starts tonight, here are a few apps that will help you stay glued on to all the action as it happens.
 Schedules, Points Table, And Stats
Since T20 matches aren't too long (it just takes around 3 hours per game), there are chances that you may miss out on some of the matches, especially those airing in the afternoon. As the tournament progresses, you can use these apps that not only give you match results, but also keep you abreast with match schedules, team and player stats, and the all-important points table.
While there isn't one single developer offering apps across different mobile platforms, here are a few options you can look at.

Watch It Live on MobileIf the matches aren't being played in your city, or you find them a bit too out of your budget, then it'll be a better idea to watch live telecast instead. nexGTv , which is available to both Android and iOS platforms will stream all the 76matches live along with highlights and re-runs on a video-on-demand section.
If your handset supports Flash, then you can also turn to IPL on YouTube to catch all the action live. This is a great option especially when you are stuck at office with primitive HR policies.
Download now available free for all Devices

IPL 2013 Schedule & Scores for AndroidFor the Android users the IPL 2013 Schedule & Scores is a handy app to have. Apart from schedules, and scores, it also gives you access to live matches (from the YouTube channel) and IPL-based tweets sorted by teams. In fact the app also lets you create reminders on your device so that you don’t miss out on any of your favorite team's matches.
Available for free at Google Play store.

IPL for Windows DeviceA similar app called IPL is available for the Windows Phone platform. Download now

IPL 2013 for iPhone and iPad - Those using an iDevice though will need to get multiple apps to get all of these features. For match reminders, along with schedules, there is the IPL 2013 .
You can set reminders and share match schedule via email or SMS with your friends. But the app does nothing beyond that.
Available for free at iTunes

BCCI Official App -  If you can live without the reminders option, the official BCCI app is a better alternative. That way you can know about all the cricket action that is happening anywhere in the world.

The app is available for both Android and iOS platforms.

IPL Dugout - If you plan to get together with a few like-minded cricket-loving pals and enjoy matches in a stadium, then you'd probably want to know which game is being played in your city when, and where you can go grab a bite after the matches get over.
That is where an app such as IPL Dugout can come to your rescue. However, the app which is available for both the iOS and Android platforms seems to be frozen in 2012 for now. Let's just hope that the app developers decide to give it a new lease of life before IPL6 goes underway.
Available free for Android and iOS

Search Song Detail Easily with Sound Hound App

Like other apps in the music recognize genre, SoundHound is designed to automatically identify the song that you play with the use of an online database. You can use SoundHound to recognize songs from CD's  downloaded tunes, and music on the radio, for instance. In addition to giving you the name of the tune and the artist, SoundHound will provide you with the name of the album and the lyrics to the song.
Shazam may be the face of music search and recognition apps, but it's not the only player in the game. SoundHound,  app available in both free and premium versions, aims to give it a run for its money by letting users discover content by matching a played song—or a sung or hummed tune!—against a deep database. It not only helps you identify an unlimited number of songs, but integrates music related tweets, lyrics, and YouTube clips as well. Overall, it's not quite Shazam, but a decent app nonetheless.

No Smoking Day: Charity Launches 'Hijacking' App to hijack cigarette

No Smoking Day: Charity Launches 'Hijacking' App As a survey shows one in 10 smokers are"desperate" to give up, an app is unveiled that virtually transforms cigarette packs.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) has pledged to hijack cigarette packs from today - No Smoking Day - by virtually transforming them in smokers' hands into items they could afford if they quit.
The charity is encouraging smokers to"swap fags for swag" by thinking about how much money they could save if they quit.

Someone who smokes 20 cigarettes a daycould save £7 a day, £49 a week, £210 a month and £2,555 a year if they kicked the habit, the BHF said.
The charity has developed a new smartphone app, Blippar, which virtually transforms a cigarette pack into a puff of smoke, before revealing items they could afford with a week, month, or year's worth of smoking savings.
This year's BHF No Smoking Day campaign
Betty McBride, director of policy and communications at the BHF, said: "The tobacco giants are notoriously protective about their slick cigarette packaging - here's a bit of slick that does some good for once.
"We need to up our game if we are going to help people beat their addiction to tobacco by finding new ways to reach out to them."
The new app comes on BHF's 30th annual No Smoking Day . A survey conducted for the 2013 campaign found that 11% of smokers are desperate to kick the habit.
And 82% of 2,000 UK smokers surveyed had tried and failed to quit.
Around one in five people smoke, according to the charity, and the latest data from the World Health Organisation shows that smoking prevalence in Europe is higher than the rest of the world.
A separate poll, conducted on 2,000 ex and current smokers by Pru Health, found that the average smoker spends 11% of income on tobacco.

RootMetrics App, tests all cellular network's Strength and speed in your neighborhood

The RootMetrics app shows mobile users the strengths and weaknesses of the cellular networks in their neighborhoods.
RootMetrics, an independent group that measures mobile performance, has an app that lets users test the strengths of their cellular networks' call signals and data-transfer speeds in their neighborhoods.
"It's hard to tell signal and data speeds on a carrier's map. The RootMetrics app lets users see how their specific network works down to the street level," said Julie Dey, vice president of marketing at RootMetrics.

Download free for iOS and Android

When users open the app, they're greeted with menu options: Test, Map and Report.
The most interactive feature of the app is the virtual map. App users can search for mobile-performance information by street, city and ZIP code. Honeycomb shapes layered over a map indicate signal and data strength from green (strongest) to dark gray (weakest).
Each shaded area can be opened to show the average signal and data speed of the user's carrier. It also compares other carriers in that neighborhood.
Areas without a shaded honeycomb indicate that RootMetrics has not tested that part of a neighborhood.
That's where the crowd source-testing part of the app comes in handy.
Users can select the test tab to begin the evaluation of either a call signal or a combination of signal and data speed. The app lets mobile-device owners choose their carrier before beginning the test.
A moving circle along a bar indicates the app is testing the networks in the area. It labels signal strength as good, better or poor.
Data reports show the upload and download speeds. These user signal-and-data tests are sent to RootMetrics to help supplement the reports generated by developers.
Users can check their signal and data speeds on the RootMetrics app, and then compare them to the performance of other carriers in the neighborhood.
